Never underestimate the leech

I got a chance to get out to enjoy this beautiful 55-degree December weather, and fish several sections of Spring Creek. Just like most wild trout streams in Missouri the trout were not huge, but they are beautiful and they love to fight.

Nice Spring Creek Rainbow
I was in one of those moods where making a decision of what to fish just wasn’t coming to me. So I took a page from the Bill Blunt book of fly fishing and started with a olive leech. Never took it off. I guess I should rephrase that…root wads and willows took their fair share of flies. Maybe it is best to say that I never switched patterns. In the end, I landed a couple dozen 7 to 10 inch rainbows and a couple that “might” stretch out to 11 or 12 inches.

Also had some extra time so I started playing  with my underwater camera. If you ever get a  chance to get you one of these they are a load of fun. Make you look at the stream in a whole new light.

Bill always told me leeches work in these small streams. I always tried fishing small flies. In the end the lesson learned is never underestimate the leech.

  3. Nice pictures! Yes, the trout is a beautiful fish. Nice underwater picture. Sadly we don't have spring creeks here in Sweden so wintertime is a time of armchair fishing and tying flies.

    Have fun with the leeches,
    M.O.
